{"id":5966,"date":"2021-05-07T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/?p=5966"},"modified":"2026-02-27T13:54:58","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T18:54:58","slug":"collateral-damage-2002","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/index.php\/2021\/05\/07\/collateral-damage-2002\/","title":{"rendered":"Collateral Damage (2002)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-top-left-radius:10px;border-top-right-radius:10px;border-bottom-left-radius:10px;border-bottom-right-radius:10px\"><blockquote><p><strong>Fans of the genre will get what they expect: explosions, gun-fights, and derring-do but the\u00a0one-man army schtick feels especially dated here.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the waning days of his big screen action career, Arnold Schwarzenegger was involved in some real clunkers. <b><i>Collateral Damage<\/i><\/b>, a 2002 movie directed by Andrew Davis (<b><i>The Fugitive<\/i><\/b>,) is one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cast as Gordy Brewer, a Los Angeles fireman, Schwarzenegger plays a doting father and loving husband. Brewer is one of those action movie average Joes who just happens to have the physique of a bodybuilder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a Colombian terrorist known as El Lobo (&#8220;The Wolf&#8221;) detonates a bomb in downtown Los Angeles, the intended target \u2014 FBI operative Peter Brandt (Elias Koteas) \u2014 survives. However, Brewer\u2019s wife and son are killed in the blast. Their deaths \u2014 categorized as \u201ccollateral damage\u201d \u2014 propel Brewer to travel to Colombia to take out El Lobo; something the United States has been unable to do for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>Collateral Damage<\/i><\/b> travels a well-worn path for action films, especially those starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The high number of implausible situations his character gets into (and out of) stretches the definition of ludicrous to the extreme. Fans of the genre will get what they expect: explosions, gun-fights, and derring-do, but the&nbsp;one-man army schtick feels especially dated here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The script does make some interesting tactical comparisons between Brewer\u2019s revenge-driven crusade and the plight of the Colombian guerrillas who want the United States out of their country. It\u2019s during those moments when I thought the movie would differentiate itself and do something truly unique. Unfortunately, there is no such attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although John Leguizamo and John Turturro receive relatively high billing in the credits, their appearances are best described as extended cameos. It\u2019s a shame because they bring some much needed levity to the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After <b style=\"font-style: italic;\">Collateral Damage<\/b>, Schwarzenegger\u2019s career path would divert into politics. That might have been the best thing for everyone for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"fsrs\"><span class=\"fsrs-stars\"><i class=\"fsrs-fas fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-fas fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-far fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-far fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-far fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"hide fsrs-text fsrs-text__hidden\" aria-hidden=\"false\">2.0 out of 5.0 stars<\/span><span class=\"lining fsrs-text fsrs-text__visible\" aria-hidden=\"true\">2.0<\/span><\/span><br><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3b3yUDJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buy on Amazon!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fans of the genre will get what they expect: explosions, gun-fights, and derring-do but the\u00a0one-man army schtick feels especially dated here.
