{"id":9349,"date":"2025-10-07T09:25:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T13:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/?p=9349"},"modified":"2026-02-27T22:43:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T03:43:31","slug":"oculus-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/07\/oculus-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Oculus (2013)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-top-left-radius:10px;border-top-right-radius:10px;border-bottom-left-radius:10px;border-bottom-right-radius:10px\"><blockquote><p><strong>It\u2019s smart, well-acted, and genuinely unsettling \u2014 a great example of modern psychological horror done right.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Writer\/director Mike Flanagan, who\u2019s become a major name in film thanks to projects like <strong><em>Doctor Sleep<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>The Life of Chuck<\/em><\/strong>, first developed 2013&#8217;s <strong><em>Oculus<\/em><\/strong> as a short film he made years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feature film stars Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, Katee Sackhoff, Rory Cochrane, Annalise Basso, and Garrett Ryan. Gillan and Thwaites play siblings Kaylie and Tim, who reunite after Tim\u2019s release from a mental institution \u2014 ten years after the traumatic deaths of their parents. Kaylie is convinced that a cursed mirror known as the Lasser Glass is responsible for what happened, and she sets out to prove it once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there, <strong><em>Oculus<\/em><\/strong> becomes a tightly woven psychological horror film that plays brilliantly with perception and memory. The movie constantly blurs the line between past and present \u2014 sometimes even merging them on screen \u2014 but thanks to Flanagan\u2019s sharp direction, it never becomes confusing. Instead, it keeps you unsettled, unsure what\u2019s real and what\u2019s a trick of the mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I really like about <strong><em>Oculus<\/em><\/strong> is that it doesn\u2019t rely on cheap jump scares. There are a few, sure, but the real power comes from its atmosphere and storytelling. The tension builds through shifting perspectives, eerie visuals, and the psychological unraveling of its characters. It\u2019s creepy rather than outright terrifying, but it&#8217;s consistently engaging \u2014 and it keeps you guessing right up until the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m honestly surprised I don\u2019t hear this one mentioned more often. Maybe the generic title doesn\u2019t help, or maybe it\u2019s just flown under the radar compared to Flanagan\u2019s later work.
