Though I hadn\u2019t seen their previous work before this, <strong><em>Abigail<\/em><\/strong> made me want to check them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film is part heist movie, part comedy, and part horror. It follows a group of criminals, each chosen for their particular skill, brought together to kidnap a young girl. As the story unfolds, they begin to realize not only who hired them, but what exactly they\u2019ve gotten themselves into. The less you know going in, the better. Unfortunately, the trailer gave away the film\u2019s big twist, which I think hurt its performance at the box office. Still, if you go in blind, there\u2019s a lot to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While <strong><em>Abigail<\/em><\/strong> isn\u2019t especially scary, it\u2019s packed with energy. The humor lands consistently, the jump scares are effective, and there\u2019s plenty of blood and gore to satisfy horror fans. The film strikes a balance between tension and laughs \u2014 you\u2019re never sure whether the next scene will make you flinch or chuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cast is a huge reason the film works as well as it does. Alicia Weir (as Abigail) completely steals the show, delivering a performance that\u2019s both eerie and commanding. The ensemble \u2014 including Angus Cloud, Katherine Newton, Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, and Kevin Durand \u2014 all play off each other really well, bringing out the film\u2019s sharp dialogue and personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there\u2019s a weak spot, it\u2019s the ending. It feels indecisive, like the filmmakers couldn\u2019t decide whether to leave things open for a sequel or not. It doesn\u2019t ruin the experience, but it\u2019s a slightly underwhelming conclusion to an otherwise strong ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, <strong><em>Abigail<\/em><\/strong> is a clever, funny, and blood-soaked twist on the heist genre with a horror edge.
