{"id":9395,"date":"2025-10-23T17:32:37","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T21:32:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/?p=9395"},"modified":"2026-02-27T10:11:35","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:11:35","slug":"talk-to-me-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/23\/talk-to-me-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Talk to Me (2023)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-top-left-radius:10px;border-top-right-radius:10px;border-bottom-left-radius:10px;border-bottom-right-radius:10px\"><blockquote><p><strong>All told, <em>Talk to Me<\/em> is one of the standout horror films of the last couple of years.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn\u2019t realize <em><strong>Talk to Me<\/strong><\/em> \u2014 a 2023 horror film directed by Michael and Danny Philippou was an Australian film going in, but that added an extra layer of unfamiliarity that actually worked in the movie\u2019s favor. The Philippou brothers, along with writer Bill Hinzman, deliver a sharp, creepy, and emotional supernatural horror story that really surprised me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film stars Sophie Wilde as Mia, Alexandra Jensen as Jade, Joe Bird as Riley, Otis Dhanji as Daniel, and Miranda Otto as Jade\u2019s mother, Sue. At the heart of the movie is this mysterious embalmed hand \u2014 a prop that becomes central to a dangerous party game. The rules are simple: grip the hand, say \u201cTalk to me,\u201d and you\u2019ll see a spirit. If you then say \u201cI let you in,\u201d the spirit can possess you \u2014 but only for 90 seconds. Any longer, and things go very, very wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, things <em>do<\/em> go wrong, because otherwise we wouldn\u2019t have a movie. What starts as a fun, viral challenge among teens quickly spirals into something much darker. Wilde\u2019s Mia becomes the emotional anchor of the story \u2014 a grieving young woman still haunted by her mother\u2019s death, trying to find belonging among her friends while being drawn deeper into this supernatural danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What struck me most about <em><strong>Talk to Me<\/strong><\/em> was how it contrasts with something like <a href=\"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/21\/smile-2022\/\"><strong><em>Smile<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (which I watched right before this). While <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/movieassault.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/21\/smile-2022\/\"><em>Smile<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>builds its horror on unrelenting dread and psychological decay, <strong><em>Talk to Me<\/em><\/strong> starts out feeling almost playful before flipping hard into genuine tragedy and terror. Sophie Wilde delivers a fantastic performance, carrying the emotional weight of the story as everything unravels around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also appreciated that the movie doesn\u2019t bother over-explaining its mythology. There\u2019s no big exposition dump about where the hand came from or how it works \u2014 it just <em>is<\/em>, much like how a Ouija board \u201cjust works\u201d in those old seance games. That restraint keeps the focus on Mia\u2019s experience and on how the supernatural amplifies her grief and guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a technical standpoint, <strong><em>Talk to Me<\/em><\/strong> is excellent. The cinematography by Aaron McLisky is sharp and dynamic, giving the film a distinct A24 polish without feeling too self-conscious. The camera moves with energy \u2014 tilting and flowing during the possession scenes \u2014 and the editing keeps things feeling alive and unpredictable. There\u2019s great use of practical effects and makeup, with only light touches of CGI during some of the possession sequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All told, <strong><em>Talk to Me<\/em><\/strong> is one of the standout horror films of the last couple of years. It\u2019s eerie, emotional, and beautifully shot. Watching it on a stormy night only made the experience better. I went in totally blind, only knowing about \u201cthe creepy hand,\u201d and came out impressed by both the scares and the heart of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n<span class=\"fsrs\"><span class=\"fsrs-stars\"><i class=\"fsrs-fas fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-fas fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-fas fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-fas fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><i class=\"fsrs-far fa-fw fa-star \"><\/i><\/span><span class=\"hide fsrs-text fsrs-text__hidden\" aria-hidden=\"false\">4.0 out of 5.0 stars<\/span><span class=\"lining fsrs-text fsrs-text__visible\" aria-hidden=\"true\">4.0<\/span><\/span>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All told, Talk to Me is one of the standout horror films of the last couple of years.
